Hamamatsu City in Shizuoka Prefecture has grown due to the remarkable growth of the textile industry after the war. Traditional dyed and woven fabrics such as “Chusen yukata” et “Enshu cotton pongee” have been handed down to the present day. The characteristic of the yukata of Natsume-Some is that it is very breathable, soft and cool.
Chusen-some” is a dyeing method unique to Japan, in which dye is poured into the cloth piled on top of paste using a kettle with a tool with a long, narrow spout that looks like a jowl.
Hamamatsu is one of the main production centers of Chusen (Japanese traditional dyeing) along with Tokyo and Osaka, et “Hamamatsu Chusen-some” is highly regarded for its advanced techniques.
The traditional technique has been passed down to the next generation thanks to the rich water of the Tenryu River and the unique “karakaze” of the Enshu region, which is ideal for dyeing, and the skills of the craftsmen.
