Maintenance of bronze sculptures

1. Silver oxide method. Use silver oxide to contact cuprous oxide to seal the exposed surface of cuprous chloride to achieve the purpose of controlling corrosion of the copper sculpture. First use mechanical methods to remove the powdery rust and expose the off-white waxy cuprous chloride. Then the silver oxide and alcohol are mixed into a paste, coated on the surface of the cuprous chloride, and placed in a humid environment to make it fully effective to form cuprous oxide and cupric chloride to cover the surface of the cuprous chloride. Both are stable salts, so many operations, until the utensils are placed in a high-humidity environment and there are no corrosion spots of powdery rust. This method is suitable for spot-like locally corroded utensils and utensils with metal inlays.

2. Benzotriazole method. Benzotriazole is a heterocyclic compound that can form stable complexes with copper and its salts, forming an insoluble and fairly strong transparent protective film on the surface of copper alloys, which can inhibit and stabilize copper carving and prevent water vapor And the erosion of air pollutants. Use distilled water, toluene, acetone and other organic solvents to remove the dirt and oil on the surface of the copper sculpture, and then immerse it in the benzotriazole alcohol solvent to infiltrate to form a complex protective film. But benzotriazole is easily sublimated by heat and loses its protective effect. Therefore, a layer of polymer material should be coated on the surface of the copper sculpture as a protective film.

3. Lye immersion method. The corroded copper sculpture is soaked in a sodium sesquicarbonate solution, so that the copper chloride is gradually converted into a stable copper carbonate, and the chloride ion of the copper sculpture is replaced and transferred into the immersion solution. The immersion liquid needs to be replaced regularly until no chlorine ions appear in the immersion liquid. Subsequently, the utensils were repeatedly washed with distilled water to remove the lye, dried and sealed. The alkali solution only extracts the chloride, and retains the colorful malachite and other corrosive layers, which does not damage the original appearance of the copper sculpture. The disadvantage of this method is that the replacement reaction time is long; in addition, the chloride is not only attached to the surface of the rust layer, but also has penetrated into the utensils to corrode the deep part of the crust, making it difficult to replace thoroughly.
